Amazon launches volunteering month

Amazon employees across the UK will help community groups to address issues from climate change and educational inequality, to food insecurity and disaster relief.

Amazon employees are getting together for Global Month of Volunteering, an initiative that aims to help the communities where they live and work. Throughout September, tens of thousands of Amazon employees will volunteer alongside their peers, adding to the company’s efforts to support its local communities throughout the year.

In collaboration with hundreds of community organisations around the world, Amazon employees will participate and lead in-person and virtual volunteering opportunities to support causes they’re passionate about. The volunteer initiatives will help address a range of issues, from climate change and education to food insecurity and disaster relief.

“Throughout September, we will come together to help some incredible organisations who are making a real difference in the areas where our employees live and work,” said John Boumphrey, Amazon UK Country Manager. “It’s fantastic to see our employees sharing their ideas and tapping into their passions to give back to our local communities.”

Josh Boer, director at Amazon tech partner VeUP said: “This initiative will have a huge impact on local communities across the UK and allow employees to play an active role in key causes. It’s really important that big tech firms give staff the chance to make a difference on everything from climate change to educational inequality as part of a fully rounded employment experience.”

Amazon also continues to work with our charity partners to provide relief to families around the country. Since launching in 2022, Amazon has donated more than half a million essential items to families across Scotland through “The Big House”, an initiative created in partnership with former Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Following the success of that programme, Amazon has expanded the ‘multibank’ model to Wigan where we are supporting more 50,000 families in need across Greater Manchester. Last year, we donated over 15 million products to UK charities, benefitting people right across the UK.

The Global Month of Volunteering is supported by year-round Amazon programmes that impact communities across the UK and globally. Last year, more than 150,000 Amazon employees from 60 countries volunteered in Amazon-sponsored activities, helping to drive positive change in their local areas.

Earlier this year, Amazon partnered with Comic Relief to become the official home of the Red Nose. Our employees up and down the UK hosted fundraising activities and together with our customers and partners, we raised £2.7 million to support those going through the toughest time of their lives.
