Staying Rooted While Growing Strong: An Interview with Certified Home Nursing Solutions

We sat down with the founders of Certified Home Nursing Solutions, Tasha Brown and Adrius King, to hear about their journey in home care, the lessons they’ve learned along the way, and how they’ve shaped their business to meet the evolving needs of Maryland’s ageing and developmentally disabled populations.

Q: Let’s start at the beginning. How did Certified Home Nursing Solutions come to life?

Tasha: Back in 2016, Adrius and I saw a real gap in how seniors were being cared for in Maryland. Too many were ending up in care homes when they wanted to stay in their own homes. We believed there had to be a better way—one that respected their dignity and allowed them to age comfortably in familiar surroundings.

Adrius: We both had family members who struggled with getting the right type of care. It felt too clinical and disconnected from the person’s emotional needs. We wanted to create a service that took a more holistic approach, focusing on the whole person—not just their medical needs.

Q: What were some of the first steps you took to get the business off the ground?

Tasha: We started small, right in Edgewood, Maryland. Our main focus was simple—provide personal, holistic home care for seniors. It was just us, a handful of caregivers, and a big vision.

Adrius: Licensing was a big milestone. Without it, we couldn’t expand beyond basic support. Getting our in-home care licence opened doors. It allowed us to serve more people and offer a wider range of services. Later, becoming a DDA provider helped us branch out into developmental disability care.

Q: Your business has grown significantly since then. What’s been driving that growth?

Tasha: Honestly, it’s been the people. We’ve always invested in training and hiring staff who really care. That’s made all the difference. We also listen to feedback from families and adapt our services based on what they need.

Adrius: Expansion wasn’t just about more locations. It was also about expanding the types of care we offer. Starting with just home care, we grew into DDA services, staffing, and even training. Every step has been about answering a need we’ve seen in the community.

Q: Could you tell us more about the DDA services you now offer?

Tasha: Absolutely. DDA services are quite broad. We provide residential support, including group homes and supported living. We also offer day programmes that help people build social and vocational skills.

Adrius: One of the most rewarding parts has been watching clients grow in independence. For example, we had a young man who started in our day programme. He struggled at first, but with job coaching and skill-building, he now works part-time and has made friends through our community events.

Q: What’s your approach to training and staffing?

Tasha: Training is key. We don’t just hire for experience—we look for compassion and willingness to learn. Our staff go through continuous training to stay sharp and deliver the best care possible.

Adrius: We’ve also worked hard to create a culturally sensitive workplace. Maryland is diverse, and our clients come from many different backgrounds. Respecting that is at the core of everything we do. We make sure our staff understand that too.

Q: What has client feedback been like over the years?

Tasha: We’re often told how much people appreciate the personal touch we bring. Families say they can see the difference in their loved ones’ mood and overall well-being. They’ve also praised our attention to details—things like remembering birthdays, cultural customs, or simply taking time to chat.

Adrius: A client once said that our caregiver wasn’t just “help”—they became like family. That’s exactly the type of bond we aim to foster.

Q: How do you stay motivated in such a demanding industry?

Tasha: It’s the little wins that keep us going. Seeing someone regain independence or a family feeling less stressed means everything. It reminds us why we started this journey.

Adrius: Also, we’re driven by the responsibility to set an example. We want to show that a small, locally grown company can make a lasting impact without cutting corners.

Q: Lastly, what advice would you give to others looking to enter this field?

Tasha: Be ready to work hard and wear many hats. More importantly, make sure your heart’s in it. This isn’t a business where you can succeed without truly caring for people.

Adrius: I’d add—listen closely to those you serve. They’ll tell you everything you need to know about how to grow, improve, and serve your community better.

Through their steady growth and unwavering focus on compassionate, culturally sensitive care, Certified Home Nursing Solutions has carved out a unique space in Maryland’s healthcare landscape—one where people are seen, heard, and treated with dignity.
